Our curriculum
Learning That Begins With the Child
Our approach is inspired by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) — a framework focused on the learning, development and wellbeing of young children.
Our framework
Why EYFS?
We follow child-centred, play-based and activity-based learning. We also draw on relevant principles of India's National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework for the Foundational Stage (NCF-FS), adapting every experience to children's developmental stages and the Indian context.
Every child is unique
Learning at their own pace
Every child learns and develops differently. Through observation, encouragement and developmentally appropriate activities, we understand each child's strengths and support what needs more practice — focusing on individual progress, never comparisons.
Seven areas of learning
Supporting the whole child
Seven connected areas guide everything children do with us.
- 1
Communication & Language
Building vocabulary, listening, speaking and expressing ideas.
- 2
Physical Development
Developing movement, coordination, fine-motor skills and independence.
- 3
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Building confidence, relationships, emotional awareness and self-regulation.
- 4
Literacy
Developing a love for stories, sounds, books, reading and early writing.
- 5
Mathematics
Exploring numbers, patterns, shapes, quantities and problem-solving.
- 6
Understanding the World
Discovering nature, people, communities, science and everyday experiences.
- 7
Expressive Arts & Design
Creating, imagining and expressing ideas through art, music, movement and role play.
How children learn
Play · Explore · Create · Connect · Reflect
- Play
- Explore
- Create
- Connect
- Reflect
Children explore ideas through hands-on activities, storytelling, music, movement, sensory experiences and creative expression. Books and worksheets, where appropriate, support these experiences rather than replace active learning.
Learning beyond the classroom
Everyday wonder
- Nature & gardening
- Art & creativity
- Stories & reading
- Music & movement
- Exploration & discovery
- Everyday life skills
Ready for primary school
Ready, never rushed
We don't rush children through milestones. Reading and writing are introduced step by step, once the foundations are in place:
- Fine-motor activities & pencil control
- Sound awareness & vocabulary
- Storytelling & pre-writing
- Early numeracy & problem-solving
- Listening & classroom routines
- Independence & social skills
At Carmelite, learning begins with the child.
